I use traditional methods of oil painting, which is a multi-step process. It may look rough at first, but developing it in stages and layers ensures a better end result, with more depth and richness.
1. The Sketch.
This depicts a charcoal sketch with a “scrub” applied, which gives me a medium tone background, instead of a stark white canvas.
2. Blocking in general tones.
This is to establish general light and dark areas and colors. It is usually on the darker and cooler side, for depth, as lighter colors are added on top.
3. Background
Here I develop the background, adding texture.
4. Details and Texture
The texture on the pet is painted, and details are finished. Client will receive a digital photo for approval at this stage.
