Because most people have a favorite photo of their pet, I try to work from that one, and the results can be dramatic. I can add backgrounds, and combine multiple pets. I use other photos and descriptions for color reference and details, and strive to capture the true beauty and personality of each special pet.
Original Photo of My Sweet Prince:
Original Photo of Lord Barkington:
Finished Portrait, 16″ x 20″ Oil on Panel:
The result-both dogs together, colors corrected, and background added. And both dogs looking at the viewer.
Original Photo of Ginger and Gilligan:
The client loved how the original photo showed her dogs’ closeness, but their faces weren’t clear, so I used other photos she specifically took of their faces for the portrait.
Finished Portrait, 16″ x 20″ Oil on Panel:
In the painting, I simplified the background, added the toy and drape to cover areas that were very unclear or cut off in the photo.
Original Photo of Stop the Talking:
The owner wanted the eye opened up, and the mane neater.
Finished Portrait, 16″ x 20″ Oil on Panel:
Now her eye looks alert, and the mane is showing. The solid background allows her beauty to shine.
Original Photo of Oliver:
Main Photo: Oliver’s ear was groomed too short, and his color wasn’t correct. The photo below shows how the owner wanted his ear and color.
Finished Portrait, 16″ x 20″ Oil on Canvas:
I based this ear from the additional photo of him, corrected the color, removed the collar and background. This showcases him at his best.
Original Photos of Forrest and Jenny:
The owner took the photos separately, as it was hard to get good shots of them together. He used my “Photo Tips” for help.
Finished Portrait, 14″ x 18″ Oil on Canvas:
I combined them, added the background, and made their eyes more visible.
