ABOUT THE ARTIST – Leah Knecht

I have a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, where I graduated with Distinction. My major was illustration, which involves bringing out the best in an image through understanding of anatomy, form, tones, lighting, and detail. I worked in creative fields for 15 years, and taught oil painting for 6 years. During that period, I studied the techniques of the master artists of the 19th century, such as Rembrandt, Manet, Da Vinci. I have also studied medical terminology and anatomy, which deepens my understanding of animal anatomy as there are similarities between humans and other mammals.

When I lost two special dogs within a few months of each other, I decided to paint their portraits to commemorate them. Seeing their portraits everyday brings me great comfort, more than their photos did, because it immortalizes them. I adopted two new puppies, and painted them as well. These portraits captured a moment in time, and bring joy to me. I realized I could, and should provide this service to other people who love their pets. My training in illustration and oil painting, and love of animals all come together in this regard.

I work from a home studio in Pasadena, CA, and clients are welcome to make an appointment for consultations, see their work in progress, or see my original portraits, which gives them a better understanding of sizing and material options.

I accept commissions from anywhere, and will safely ship the finished portraits. Digital photos can be sent through email, or if large files, uploaded easily. Film photos can be mailed to my studio, and will be returned along with the finished portrait. It is best if you send copies of the originals, if using regular mail.
